Chakri Day (6th April 2010 - Public Holiday)
Chakri Day commemorates the founder of the current dynasty, King Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke (Rama I), previously known as Chao Phraya Chakri.
Songkran Festival (13th to 15th April 2010 - Public Holiday)
Songkran is the Thai New Year, a time of both pious and hilarious celebration: a time for showing respect to elders by pouring water over their hands, and a time for showering passers-by from water pistols, buckets and even hose pipes. Not for the faint hearted.

Rocket Festival - Hae Bang Fai (01 to 02 May 2010)
The Rocket Festival is celebrated throughout the North East of Thailand, though not always on the same days. When I first heard the words Bang Fai - it sounded remarkably like 'Bun Fight' - it turned out to be that and more. I had worked out with a Thai friend that Bang Fai meant something like 'fireworks', so I was expecting a firework display.

In fact the Bang Fai are enormous home-made rockets made of bamboo or plastic tubing, packed with gunpowder, and up to three meters in length - more like miniature ballistic missiles.

Visakha Bucha Day is a lunar festival celebrating the birthday of the Buddha but also his enlightenment and entry into nirvana.
Asalha Bucha Day (25 July 2010 - Public Holiday)
The day before the beginning of the Rains Retreat. Celebrates the first sermon of the Buddha to 5 disciples.
Khao Phansa 26 July 2010 - Public Holiday)
This day marks the beginning of the "Rains Retreat", or "Buddhist Lent", a period when monks are expected to remain in the monasteries, and young men undergo temporary ordination. The three month period coincides roughly with the Rainy Season in South East Asia, and it is said that monks are expected to refrain from wandering about the countryside so as not cause damage to the young rice in the flooded fields.

Also celebrated as Mothers Day.
Chinese Vegetarian Festival (October 8 2010 onwards)
This festival which originated in Phuket, takes place on the first 9 days of the 9th lunar month, which by my reckoning would be from 8th of October in 2010.

Chulalongkorn Day (23 October 2010 - Public Holiday)
The anniversary of the death of King Rama V (King Chulalongkorn), one of the most admired of Thailand's monarchs.
25 October 2010 Public Holiday
Chulalongkorn Day falls on a Saturday this year, so the following Monday becomes a public holiday.
